Words Matter: A Practical Guide to Promoting Person-First Language Training

September 3 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Join us to explore the power of person-first language, with a particular emphasis on effectively working with and serving youth and individuals impacted by substance use and misuse.

This webinar will be presented in partnership with St. Mary’s County Health Department and the Opioid Response Network (ORN) and will feature the expertise of Jerria Martin, a substance abuse prevention consultant and leader in the field who has been recognized both by both the president of the United States and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) as one of the top drug coalition leaders in the country.

Join Jerria as she examines how language impacts the treatment, engagement, and retention of youth and individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs). Through engaging activities and multimedia content, participants will learn strategies for integrating stigma-free, person-first language into practice, promoting respect, dignity, and positive outcomes for the youth and communities they serve.

After this webinar, participants will be able to:
>> Understand the impact of stigma and language on individuals and systems and identify examples of stigmatizing and person-first language.
>> Practice replacing stigmatizing terms with person-first alternatives.
>> Develop actionable strategies for incorporating person-centered language into daily practice.
